Sony has introduced a separate magnetic charging dock DK31 for Xperia Z1 and DK30 for Xperia Z Ultra.  You can charge your phone via it as inside it has EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector which unfortunately is not available for sale separately. We found that many users were uncomfortable to put their phone on Magnetic Charging Dock DK31 / DK30  and then use it if they want to. We have found a pretty neat solution for this problem. Charging Dock DK31 is priced at £34.99 in UK by Sony, definitely a bit costly.

As both Sony Magnetic Charging Dock DK31 / DK30 is fitted with EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector so it can be removed and then use it separately to charge your Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra. Let’s see how you can remove EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector safely.

How to remove EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector from Charging Dock DK31 / DK30

We are carrying out process for Sony Magnetic Charging Dock DK31 and same goes for DK30. Following below method will void the

Step 1 : Take the Sony Magnetic Charging Dock DK31 and place it upside down after removing its adapter.

Step 2 : See the below pic, notice the space present at both side, just put your finger nail in it and try to pull it upwards.

Step 4 : Now carefully remove the  EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector from the dock and place it safely.

Step 5 :  Now charge your Xperia Z Ultra or Xperia Z1 after connecting EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector to your phone and use only AC Adapter which you got with your phone.

Note : Do not use computer to connect USB end of EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector to charge your phone.

Isn’t that was simple to charge your Xperia Z1 via EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector rather than using full Sony Magnetic Charging Dock DK31.

Be careful while removing EC21 Charging Cable, well if can find this nice cable anywhere, buy it as it is very easy to charge via it as there is no need to open the USB flap of your phone very frequently and will prevent it from damaging.

Let us know if you have done this or if you find any difficulty in removing, drop your comments we will help you out 🙂

    • Anurag Kumar October 17, 2013 at 11:00 pm - Reply

no official cable like this, local i won’t prefer, slow charging time. Better buy somewhere online at around $15-18.

Note : Do not use computer to connect USB end of EC21 Charging Cable with magnetic connector to charge your phone.

    • John October 18, 2013 at 4:39 am - Reply

      why ??

      • Anurag Kumar October 18, 2013 at 9:14 am - Reply

As PC will not give the same charge of 1.5A as ac adapter will give and charging will take ages..
        So use ac adapter only.

Thanks for the post. Can this be assembled again after dismantling to use again as a dock?

yes it can be, but unscrewing while dismantling should be done carefully.

can u connect it in both direction?
i worried about the electrical pol if it could damage the phone.

    • Anurag Kumar November 4, 2013 at 4:23 pm - Reply

It can only be connected in one direction because of electric poles…

    Hi,
Is it possible to use dk31 ac charger/adapter with microusb data cable?
    I mean, like this connection:
    wall -> dk31 AC charger/adapter -> microusb data cable -> xperia z1 microusb port/connector.
I intend to leave dk31 dock at work, take only ac charger/adapter with me and use it with microusb data cabe at home.
I wonder to know if it is ok (or not) to use this configuration due electric issues.
    Thx and regards!

Buddy i seriously didn’t get what you want to say…Simple English please ?

you want to use Dock at work for charging Z1 and at home you want to charge with USB cable ( connected to AC Adapter ) right ? Well if yes, it seems ok to me, no such issues as you mentioned.
Even i am using dk31’s ec21 magnetic cable to charge my phone where ever available 🙂

      • Ricardo November 5, 2013 at 12:12 am - Reply

        Sorry for my English! 😛
Well, I think you get the point.
But if has any doubt, please see this image/photo I take (google drive):
        https:// drive.google.com/file/d/0BwwHSlgmFVvqT3NQeU5XS2xXdlk/edit?usp=sharing
This is my doubt: is that configuration possible?
If you get the point, you said “yes”, is that right?
        Thx again!

        • Anurag Kumar November 5, 2013 at 12:22 am - Reply

well it seems pretty ok to me 🙂

It is the normal configuration. AC Adapter of Z1 and Dock Dk31 is same ( both 1.5A output ). No issues you can charge your phone.

I would suggest you to have an EC21 Magnetic charging cable instead of using USB port as it may damage the flap – Check here – https://www.gizmobolt.com/2013/10/12/remove-ec21-charging-cable-sony-magnetic-charging-dock-dk31-dk30-xperia-z1-xperia-z-ultra/

          • Ricardo November 5, 2013 at 1:01 am -

            Thank you!
I wondered if there was any problem in providing 1.5A of power to the microusb port (that usually receive only 500mA of the pc/notebook with a usb/microusb cable). Now I see it doesn´t.
Well, I think you clarified me!
            Thank you again!

I have an important question. Did the cable you removed from the DK31 have a sony logo on it? The instructions posted on HardwareZone and reposted on xperiablog show a logo on the cable, but it’s unclear on your pictures. I’m asking because I purchased the cable only from dx-box and it has a logo. I purchased the DK31 from an amazon seller and the cable doesn’t not have a logo (charging end). I’m trying to figure out if I goes a generic cable included in my dock… Thanks

    • Anurag Kumar November 14, 2013 at 10:11 am - Reply

Well I too noticed this thing on my cable also, yes mine don’t have any logo of Sony on it thought logo is there on Dock.

Above Dock was sent to us by MobileFun as review sample unit with a bill and warranty card so it is a 100% genuine dock.

It seems issue from Sony side abut that logo not present on some cables.

      • SM November 14, 2013 at 12:04 pm - Reply

Thanks for the reply. Would you be able to confirm whether your dock charges through a usb port on a computer? The cable I got from dx-box (with sony logo) charged on both a wall charger and a computer usb port, however the dock one (with no logo) only charges with a wall plug, and does nothing when plugged into a computer usb port, unfortunately.

        • Anurag Kumar November 14, 2013 at 12:41 pm - Reply

Well you should only charge your phone using wall charger only as it has 1.5A output and the usb port of pc don’t have that much power means slow chargig time.

Yes i just checked that cable from dock itself with no logo doesn’t charge via usb port of pc.

To my knowledge Sony has not put that ec21 cable on their site as a product so it is not officially available though.

Thanks for pointig out some good observation here 🙂

          • Ricardo November 14, 2013 at 6:28 pm -

Well, I think such observations could go to main article… 😉

Why do you say we shouldn’t connect the magnetic cable to the computer to charge the phone?

    • Anurag Kumar November 18, 2013 at 11:39 am - Reply

first of all current will be low, slow charging time…2nd if you are using the ec21 cable directly taken out from dock dk31 it will not work with computer usb port but if you bought ec21 separately with the sony logo on it, it may work.

Hello, thanks for the guide, one question: to remove the bottom part of it i have to brake it? because i’m trying to open it but it’s strong and i’m afraid to broke it…

    • Anurag Kumar January 23, 2014 at 6:33 pm - Reply

Actually they are screwed from inside, I read it somewhere that they can be unscrewed but I didn’t find a way to do that, so I just broke mine from the side where they are screwed but after breaking also slightly only it can be fitted back and well used as a dock, for me it was review item so I didn’t mind breaking as I don’t use dock, I took out EC21 cable and still using it.

      • Carlo January 23, 2014 at 7:00 pm - Reply

i’ve done it… it can’t be done without brake it, but if it is done with accuracy the damage is very little… it can be assembled again without any problem. Thank you!

The screws are under the rubber. Just lift the rubber to show it (rubber got adhesive like double-sided tape)

Just wondering is there any plus side to this dock/cable when compared to the cheap Chinese imitations available for £6. Is the quality aloe better?

    Cheers.

    • Anurag Kumar January 24, 2014 at 5:26 pm - Reply

Yes except for quality and sony product nothing is different.
Well mate when you have spent so much of worth money on Z1 then why not a bit more on sony cable ? Why to choose Chinese cable which can screw your phone and comes with no warranty..i personally don’t use cheap products with my z1

is EC21 compatible with Z1 compact? what is the difference between EC21 and the magnetic charger (with chip board) inside DK32?thanks

    • Anurag Kumar March 16, 2014 at 11:13 am - Reply

yes actually inside every dock Sony has fitted same EC21 cable, so every dock is just a plastic junk with EC21 cable, better buy EC21 cable alone only if you don’t need a dock.

    Hi,
Is it ok. (safe for battery and the phone) to use this cable on Xperia Z2 please?
Magnetic connectors for Z1 and Z1 are the same?
Z2 has stronger battery will this cable affect battery if used after while?

  27. Hermes Hidayat June 28, 2014 at 10:50 pm - Reply

Hi,i just bought the DK31 for my Z2.i got the DK31 because i could remove the cable.I checked the volt and amperage compared to the usb cable which came with the phone.the volt and amperage is the same.so the conclusion is it charges just as fast as the micro usb which came with the phone.to use it safely for your Z2,just use the adaptor which came with the phone but use the magnetic cable you removed from DK31.

from my point of view,it would not damage your Z2.because the phone only takes in the needed amount of power.i noticed my Z2 taking in 1.6A of power with 15% of battery and taking in 0.8A of power when the battery was at around 70%+

i have both the original magnetic cable(from DK31)and generic magnetic cable(bought from the net)the main difference is the charging time and strength of the magnet.the original cable would not fall off easily.the generic cable would drop off even if you just fiddle with it.The original magnetic charges faster than the generic one i bought.

    hope it helps 😀

As long as the phone is sealed and not leaking it will be fine.
However, the charger will probably break in a bad way.
