...it's actually best if you don't know anything about it before you play it :D
TSP does not actually require Half Life 2 on PC, only the Source SDK which should download automatically when you start the game. On Mac, HL2 is required.

Loaded it into steam just fine and it plays but I'm not able to interact with buttons or doors, left mouse clicking doesn't do anything. I can't figure out how to fix this, help?
OH, of course 'E' is the interact button, not left mouse click. I should have realised. Had to download 1.3 to figure it out though.

"The Stanley Parable" is BY FAR the most overrated, 'gayest,' 'shortest,' and 'dumbest' HL2 user-made mod that I have ever played through.
This mod begins with a narration....which just so happens to be the 'voice' of a fairly generic and intelligent-sounding 'bloke' who is showing video clips of -- and relating the story of a so-called "Stanley" -- who is an employee at some lame company. Stanley's 'job' entails him inputting numbers into a machine all day long.
Who IS this unknown "Stanley" 'swag?' Is it Paul Stanley -- lead singer of the band K.I.S.S. ("Knights in Satan Service")? Is it perhaps, instead, "Stanley Humphries" former quarterback of the San Diego Chargers, who was very underrated, who played for the Chargers from about 1992-1997?
Soon after this 'narration' by this generic 'bloke' -who remains invisible throughout the mod...though his narration continues unabated, nonetheless, you somehow very soon afterwards become the 'avatar' of this mysterious 'Stanley swag'....and began walking out of your office down a hallway. You are given a choice to enter one of two doors....but if you make the 'wrong choice' -- that is if you choose to enter the door that the the bloke doesn't WANT you to....then soon afterwards the game ends.
However, if you DO make the correct choices of entering the doors that the bloke ORDERS you to -- then within a short amount of time you eventually reach a power generator room -- after which you reach the outside of the building that you are employed at -- and the mod ends THAT QUICKLY. This is at best about a 5 minute mod, no more -- no exaggeration. It is a very, very, very dumb and gay mod...there is no action, no shooting -- just walking down a FEW hallways and being compelled/forced to obey the directions of the 'bloke' in order to reach the end.
I rate this very stupid 'turkey' of a mod (or is it a 'turducken,' instead???) a 1/10. I feel that I am generous in that I actually gave it a 1 instead of a 0.
Does it matter who Stanley is? If you hate new people so much, your social life must be terrible.
The "generic bloke" is not invisible, the generic bloke is simply not in the same room as you.
Sure, this can be a 5 minute mod if you don't realize there's multiple endings.
So what if there's no action or shooting? People loved job simulator.
I rate this angry, basic review 1/10. Felt generous enough to not give this a 0.
If you liked it so much, you should try the remake!
There are 4 hours of gameplay due to the sheer amount of branching paths. You tried to and decided to whine about it. *******.
