Disaster Recovery in Lync Server 2013

 Feb 14, 2014

Lync Server 2013 contains a number of new disaster recovery features. It can be used for branch site resiliency, and there are specific tools for backing up and restoring a Lync Server 2013 environment. Lync Management Shell (LMS) is the Windows tools that can be used for backing up and restoring data. LMS is based on the Windows PowerShell command-line interface technology and enables users to manage Lync Server 2013 from the command line. There are approximately 70 product specific cmdlets. You can get some samples from the Microsoft PowerShell Script repository website. Some examples include:

  • Export-CsRgsConfiguration is used to export the response group configuration, and the Import-CsRgsConfiguration is used for the import process.
  • Export-CsUserdata is used to export Lync users, and Import-CsUserdata is used to import the Lync user information.

There are some components that need to be considered to backup and restore. Your backup plan should include the required SQL Server databases such as XDS, LIS, RgsConfig, Rtcxds, LcsLog, LcsCDR, QoeMetrics and Mgc. Also, make sure to back up the core SQL Server databases such as Master, Model and MSDB databases. In a Lync Server environment, you can use many components to provide resiliency for the voice infrastructure. A few of such components are Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA), Media bypass, SIP trunking, and Call Admission Control. Out of all these, SBA is the most common deployment. It is a device that aims to increase the resiliency of branch offices in terms of communications. In the case of network failures, SBA is also able to switch VoIP calls from the network over into the PSTN. As always, there are a few best practices for designing site resiliency and these include:

  1. You must ensure the resiliency of your network infrastructure
  2. Make WAN links redundant
  3. You must treat enterprise voice as a critical component of your infrastructure
